John Wick and The Matrix star Keanu Reeves is said to be in talks to star in Hulu’s The Devil In The White City, a series focusing on the true story of two men at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.
The series is based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book, according to Deadline, which was first to report the news. The story involves “murder, romance, and mystery,” Deadline reported.
“The Devil in the White City tells the true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893,” reads a line from its description. “It follows Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical ‘Murder Castle’ on fair grounds–a palace built to seduce, torture and mutilate young women. The story takes the viewer on a tour of murder, romance, and mystery in the gilded age.”
If Reeves–an accomplished, beloved, and veteran film actor–officially joins the project, it would be his first major role on a US TV show. It’s not immediately clear which role Reeves would play.
The Devil In The White City has been in the works for some time, as Leonardo DiCaprio bought the film rights in 2010 and Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese was at one point attached to direct. Plans for a film shifted to the small screen after Hulu announced in 2019 that it would make a TV show with DiCaprio and Scorsese producing.
This news comes shortly after The Matrix Resurrections debuted in theaters and on HBO Max. It’s made $105.5 million worldwide at the box office, but that’s only a section of its success, since many people watched it at home on HBO Max. Reeves is also set to star in John Wick 4, which was recently delayed to 2023.
